What should you do right after a DUI?
Being charged with a DUI can be scary and confusing, especially if it’s your first one. After being pulled over and charged with the DUI charge, you might be lost as to what to do next or where to go. Here’s what Crosby Law Firm suggests you do immediately after being charged to have the best results and smoothest transition.
Get a Ride Home
Every specific DWI or DUI case varies- you may be released from jail immediately, you may have to stay in jail overnight, or may have to stay until you’re sober. Either way, you will have to arrange a ride home, as driving on a suspended license right after a DUI charge is highly illegal.
Take Note of Your Court Date
Before even leaving jail, officials will give your court notice, including the date and time you have to appear. It’s extremely important to not forget when your case is, as missing it could be detrimental to your potential future and could cause additional consequences. Ensure that you have nothing else going on that day and time and put it on your calendar immediately.
Plan Out Transportation
After being charged with a DUI or DWI, your license will be suspended until charges are dismissed or until the suspension period is over. It’s illegal to drive on a suspended license, so within the time it’s suspended, you should make arrangements for transportation. The court may grant you a hardship license, which allows you to drive legally just to work or school. If not, you will have to figure out alternate transportation options for those as well.
Look Into SR-22 Insurance
It’s often hard to get a good insurance plan if you have a DUI or DWI on your record, especially if you have more than one. SR-22 insurance is special insurance meant for those with a not-so-perfect record. Your insurance premiums will most likely increase and remain high for a bit of time, but with SR-22 insurance you don’t have to worry about being denied for a bad driving record.
