For Whom is It Legal?
Like alcohol, the legal age for purchasing and recreationally using marijuana is 21. After January 1, 2020, marijuana will be legal for purchase and use for those of the legal age in the state of Illinois. A medical card will no longer be required for purchase of marijuana products from licensed sellers. Is There a Limit to the Amount I Can Purchase?
Any Illinois resident, 21 years or older, can legally possess up to 30 grams of marijuana. Visitors are limited to half of that amount. The THC content in marijuana products is also limited to 500mg in any infused products, such as edibles, and up to 5 grams in cannabis concentrate.
Where Can I Legally Smoke?
Smoking marijuana is limited to certain locations. In Illinois, it is legal to smoke in your own home and on-site in licensed, cannabis-related businesses. It is prohibited from public places, in motorized vehicles, on school grounds, or near any on duty city workers such as bus drivers, police, and firefighters. Private business owners or property owners have the right to ban smoking on their premises.
